Case against protest by 26 journalists withdrawn

On the direction of Balochistan Governor Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi, the local police have withdrawn the case against 26 journalists for protesting in front of Governor and Chief Minister Secretariat on Wednesday. Quetta Police registered a case against 26 journalists on Monday, for their protest in front of the Governor House and Chief Minister Secretariat against the targeted killing of ARY reporter Abdul Haq Baloch in Khuzdar. The registration of a case against the journalists sparked country-wide protests against the police who instead of arresting the killers, registered a case against protesting journalists. Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani and Governor Magsi condemned the police action. On Tuesday, the protesting journalists gave a 24-hour deadline, threatening with strong protests if the case was not withdrawn till Wednesday evening. On Wednesday evening, Balochistan Information Minister Yunis Mullazai met with Balochistan Union of Journalists (BUJ) President Esa Tareen and handed over the letter of withdrawal of the case. BUJ president thanked the governor and chief minister for their timely action and demanded action against the police officials who registered the case.
