Proper construction work on the Sixth Road flyover cannot be started yet, despite a lapse of the date given by the Punjab Highways Department.
The highways department gave a date of September 15 to start proper construction work on the flyover and it was to be completed within 120 days but the work had been deferred after the construction of an underground test pile. This condition had been hinting that the construction work would be delayed.
When contacted, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) official said that the work on the flyover was underway and the residents would only realize it when the flyover was fully erected. There was no delay in the work and the flyover would complete on time, the official added.
The CDA official further said that the alternative traffic plan was ready and the service road would be opened for traffic even during the construction phase of the flyover. Moreover, implementation of the alternative traffic plan was the only resolution to the encroachment problem in the area, he added.
The construction company NLC’s representative Brig Shahid informed that the stage of putting weight on the test pile in accordance with the design of the flyover would be started in a couple of days, after which the traffic plan would be implemented and the underground piling would be started for the pillars of the flyover.
On the other hand, some high level sources said that the Punjab government initiated the construction work on the flyover in haste but the summary of the work could not be passed yet. No funds were allocated for the project in the annual development program because this project was not part of the original plans.
