Schools in various parts of Rawalpindi lack the basic facilities of a proper building, furniture and washrooms but the authorities concerned have turned a blind eye to the situation.
21 out of a total of 30 schools in the Rawalpindi Cantonment had been running in dilapidated private buildings that lacked even the basic facilities for the students. On the other hand, the Punjab government during the past four years had upgraded and merged eight primary schools into other already congested middle schools which caused accommodation problems.
The government could neither cope with the shortage of furniture in the schools nor the could they provide the facility of water and washroom. There had been 28 schools in PP-54, a constituency of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Chaudry Ayaz, among which 20 were for girls and 8 were for boys. Moreover, there had been no college for the boys in the area. People of the area said that the government was neglecting the education of boys in the area.
It is pertinent to mention here that eight primary schools, including government girls primary schools of Aziz National Dheri Abad, Tahli Mohri, Tariq Abad, Dhok Muqeem and Abadi No.1, had been merged into other middle schools which were already facing a shortage of furniture, rooms, and teachers. The teachers and students were very depressed as there was no space for students of the new classes.
Meanwhile, the dilapidated building of the Government Girls Primary School, Bakra Mandi, situated on the brink of a nullah was posing a grave danger to the students’ health and lives. Students of the school remained ill due to the stink rising from the filthy nullah. The teachers, students and parents have demanded of the Punjab government, especially the Rawalpindi lawmakers to take notice of the situation and urged them to allocate funds for the construction of additional class rooms, washrooms and shifting of the school buildings to better locations and for the provision of furniture.
They said that the parliamentarians were getting millions of rupees in grants for the development work but they had done nothing for the educational institutions in Rawalpindi city.
