Flood affected population awaits govt aid, epidemics grip destroyed areas

Thousands of flashflood and rain affected population of Balochistan, Sindh and Southern Punjab still await government relief aid and epidemics have gripped various areas adding to the miseries of the devastated people. Six dead bodies were recovered by the rescue personnel from Rabi Canal in Nasirabad on Tuesday.
The situation in Jaffarabad has been described as desperate where flood water is spread all around in fields, streets and roads. People find limited dry places to take refuge.
In Naseerabad and surrounding areas, water has started receding and the situation is likely to improve if there was no more rain and floods.
Many districts of Southern Punjab including Rajanpur were adversely affected as heavy rains and floods in streams and nullahs, inundated their residential houses besides destroying thousands of acres cultivated lands.
The affected areas were still disconnected with rest of the country which has hindered initiation of relief activities and stranded local people have started moving to safer places.
In Sandela area of Shah Jamal, due to breech in Saim canal water entered residential areas causing collapse of roofs and walls of many houses.
Due to non availability of food and commodities and clean drinking water, stranded people were forced to consume unhygienic food and polluted water which has resulted in spread of epidemics such diahorea and gastroenteritis.
Federal and provincial governments despite commitments have been unable to reach all the affected people.
Agriculture, which is the only source of income of the affected population has also been completely destroyed resulting in end of their sources of income. They would need relief assistance for a longer period of time.
