Punjab University Vice Chancellor (VC) Mujahid Kamran said that introduction of a merit-based admission policy, transparent selection of teaching and non-teaching staff has eliminated nepotism in the University of the Punjab (PU).
Kamran said that a 30 member admission committee comprising of deans, chairmen, directors, professors and principals of the constituent colleges had been re-constituted to ensure all 30,000 admissions on merit in morning, afternoon and evening sessions. He added that in case of any violation, chairman of the concerned department would be placed under suspension, besides initiating disciplinary proceedings against the transgressors.
He said that soon after taking over as the VC five years ago, he made the entire admission and selection criteria transparent. 50 percent marks were awarded by PU on academic qualification, research, publications and academic experience of potential teaching candidates. The remaining 50 were broken down into 20 marks for subject specialization, 15 for oral communication skills, 10 for job aptitude and five for personality. Apart from their performance in the interview, they must have to secure at least 60 percent aggregate marks for selection. Special care is taken in the selection of subject specialists so that only the best were employed.
He added that university teachers had authored a number of books on different topics, besides contributing research articles to national and international journals.
Commenting on the issue of students gangs operating in the university, he said that “nobody would be allowed to sabotage peaceful and congenial academic atmosphere of the varsity for their vested interests as 99 percent of the students and teachers desire to follow disciplinary codes in all faculties.
