President Asif Ali Zardari spent a busy day in the provincial capital on Friday, meeting victims of the shoe factory fire, his party workers and coalition partners, on his second trip to Lahore since assuming charge at the Presidency.
Zardari visited Mayo Hospital to inquire about the health of the injured in the shoe factory blaze and directed hospital administration to provide the best possible medical treatment to them. Earlier, Punjab Governor Latif Khosa submitted a report to the president regarding the incident at the Governor House. The president had directed the governor to prepare a report on the incident, which had claimed lives of 25 persons and injured several others in the Bund Road shoe factory two days ago. Zardari had taken immediate action and asked authorities concerned to provide best possible treatment to the injured admitted in different hospitals of Lahore. He visited all the injured persons and inquired about their health.
He later met Deputy Prime Minister Pervez Elahi and discussed the country’s overall political situation as well as matters pertaining to PPP and PML-Q alliance.
In their meeting held at the Governor House, the president said in accordance with the vision of Benazir Bhutto, politics of reconciliation was being pursued to strengthen the democratic system in the country. Both the leaders discussed matters pertaining to the coalition of both parties and the next general elections.
Pervez, who is also the central leader of PML-Q, said that both parties would also form an alliance for the general elections.
The president urged PPP office bearers to step up efforts to reach out to the people in their respective areas and address their issues at their doorsteps. The president addressed a delegation of PPP Punjab office bearers, who had called on him at the Governor House.
The delegation included among others Raja Riaz, Imtiaz Safdar Warraich, Haji Chan, Zulfikar Gondal, Shaukat Basra, Ashraf Sohna and Amer Dogar.
Matters pertaining to reorganization of the party, preparations for the upcoming general elections and development issues in their respective areas were discussed during the meeting.
