The young doctors, on Thursday, denied that the Lahore High Court (LHC) has barred them from holding protests and demanded of those who claim otherwise to produce a” written order or proof”,
Pakistan Today has learnt.
The young doctors once again abandoned the hospitals and took to the roads; blocking Jail Road in front of Services Hospital and Canal Bank Road near Jinnah Hospital. They held protest demonstrations demanding the provincial government to accept the demands of their proposed service structure down to every word and sub clause. They were holding placards inscribed with slogans against the government. They criticized the chief minister for spending billions on the Bus Rapid Transit System and the Youth Festival, while ignoring the health sector. The doctors blocked the city’s two main arteries to all kind of traffic for more than two hours.
“These [young] doctors always select rush hours to block roads to cause maximum trouble to commuters. They don’t see ambulances, school children and others on their way to perform important chores. This is so selfish on their part, putting their own interest above everything,” Ahsan Manzoor, a banker stuck on Jail Road said.
The LHC in a recent hearing of the case on the service structure of doctors had reminded the YDA members that the issue of service structure was sub-judice, ordering them to abstain from protesting while the court was looking into the matter. However, YDA spokesman Dr Nasir denied that the LHC had issued any orders barring doctors from holding protests. “I was present in the court room and the court did not issue any order in this regard. Whoever claims as such, he or she should show us a written proof. The young doctors have given a call of another protest on September 19 as well.” Meanwhile police has registered a case against YDA members of Mayo hospital on the request of Medical Superintendent for physically threatening AMS Tariq Pistol.
BRT, YDA keep roads clogged
Various areas in the city were hit by a massive traffice jam which caused roads to be clogged for hours on Wednesday.
Many road arteries were clogged due to the construction work on Bus Rapid Transit Project while roads leading downtown were blocked by demonstrations of Young Doctors Association (YDA).
Traffic remained blocked at Canal road, FC underpass, Jail Road, Lower Mall, Mall Road, Mcload Road, Liberty Chowk, Jinnah Flyover and Cantonment areas. Fights broke out between fellow commuters as hot and humid weather took toll on their nerves.
Citizens demanded from the provincial government to take notice of the situation that plagued the roads daily and to chalk effective strategies to ensure smooth flow of traffic.
