Activists of the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) on Thursday manhandled a senior police official during a protest against the police for not arresting the alleged killers of a fellow IJT member. According to details, a large number of IJT activists led by Punjab University acting nazim Hafiz Nauman Zafar besieged the Muslim Town Police Station to protest against the delay in arrest of the killers of Owais Aqeel, a student of the Punjab University Law College who was murdered four months ago during a clash between two student groups. The IJT supporters were shouting slogans against the police when Superintendent of Police Imtiaz Sarwar reached the spot and tried to placate the agitated protesters. However, the mob manhandled SP Imtiaz, tore open his uniform and then tried to enter the police station.
The police personnel resorted to baton charge, resulting in a clash with the demonstrators. Three policemen and five students were injured in the clash while 30 protesters were taken into custody. The injured were later admitted to a local hospital for treatment.
Pakistan Today made repeated attempts to contact SP Imtiaz but he did not receive his phone. Police sources, however, told Pakistan Today that the police released the arrested students after negotiations with senior leaders.
