Karachi ex-city nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal, who was ranked second best mayor around the globe in ‘Mayor of the Moment’ during 2008, has started campaign after President Zardari’s announcement of local government elections in Sindh before general elections, it has been learnt reliably.
In a meeting with ruling-Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Sindh circle leadership at Bilawal House on September 2, President Zardari has announced that local government elections in Sindh would be held before general elections. As the president announced local body elections, former city nazim Mustafa Kamal has started introductory campaign to convince Karachiites for his re-election as a city nazim.
He has adopted a trend which was introduced by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) and started approaching residents through short messaging service (SMS). There were several messages roaming in Karachi in which performance of the ex-city Nazim was highlighted. In these messages, it was highlighted that the entire world has recognized the performance of Mustafa Kamal and he was ranked second in Mayor of Moment in 2008. He was appreciated in these messages for construction of flyovers and roads for overcoming traffic problems in the metropolis. He was declared loyal to Karachi and said he was the first who raised slogan of own Karachi. It was said he has resolved issues pertaining to Karachiites during his rule and his re-election as a city nazim may prove helpful in returning glory of city which was disappeared after the local government system abolished.
Muttaheda Qaumi Movement (MQM) spokesman said he had no idea about campaign for Mustafa Kamal re-election as a city nazim. He said MQM is a political party wherein party policy matters but not individuals. No doubt, his performance was recognized by not only the residents of Karachi but his services were also recognized internationally. However, it doesn’t mean that he would be MQM candidate for city nazim if local government ordinance was approved and enforced.
He said MQM did not take any decision to give party tickets to any candidate for election as a city nazim so far. He said the local government ordinance was yet to be finalized and it would be premature to say that who would be MQM candidate for the seat of next city nazim.

  1. MQM candidate for the seat of next city nazim must be SMK. Inspite of my reservations about MQM, there are no two opinions about SMK. If MQM dosen't give him party ticket, I advise SMK to go for it as an "azad" candidate. In case the voting is rigging-free, SMK will win. However, to be dead sure, SMK must agree to appoint me as the naib-nazim. Otherwise, well … I wouldn't mind if anybody else wins. Who cares?
