KU organizes seminar on regional peace and security

Karachi University’s (KU) Department of Political Science Thursday organized a seminar titled ‘Regional and Trans-regional approach to peace and security’ which drew a large number of participants including university students, academics and guests from various other walks of life. In his hour-long speech, chief guest Jamil Ahmed Khan, Pakistan’s Ambassador to United Arab Emirates (UAE), said regional alliance was imperative in order to maintain collective peace and security in various parts of the world.
During his presidential address, Vice Chancellor KU Prof Dr Muhammad Qaiser emphasized that a combination of peace, security and education always resulted in a triangle that guaranteed absolute success of a nation. He was of the opinion that fruitful discussions on alive and contemporary issues could open up the youth’s minds and inculcate a sense of tolerance in them. During the course of his talk, Ambassador Jamil Ahmed Khan underscored the importance of regional alliances and walked the audience through the complex set of institutional mechanisms and that how these frameworks resolved conflicts by drawing on his experiences of working with the United Nations (UN) and other multilateral bodies. He emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence against the backdrop of various conflicts with potential to endanger the world peace and security. The envoy also recounted Pakistan’s contributions in maintaining peace in the South Asian region as a responsible nuclear state with established policy of investing in collective security for the region. “To the students who have come today to attend the lecture, I must appreciate and encourage learning how our world operates and what means are available to guarantee a conflict-free planet,” said Ambassador Khan. During the welcome address, Dean Faculty of Arts Prof Dr Zafar Iqbal identified the importance of tolerance in maintaining peace and harmony in the region. He declared that lack of tolerance was one of many reasons of the existing chaos. The master of ceremony Prof Dr Ahmed Qadri highlighted the aims and objectives of the seminar which was aimed at updating their students with contemporary models and structure of political science and to provide them a platform for informative sessions on current and alive issues.
