Diseases can be prevented by just boiling water: VC

Liaquat University Medical and Health Sciences Jamshoro Vice Chancellor Prof Mashoor Alam Shah has said that being medical professionals, the doctors are bound to take care of the community by educating the people about the preventive measures for the control of diseases.
While addressing the students of Final year MBBS/BDS at a Lecture on “Vision for the Future” on Thursday, the Vice Chancellor informed that the university has arranged several public awareness seminars while health awareness messages are being relayed through print and electronic media.
“We need to convey the message to the public that many diseases can be prevented by just boiling the drinking water”, he said. He advised the students to concentrate on their studies as every minute of their learning phase is precious and they must take full advantage of the time, so that they can deliver the best possible services to the community as a responsible individual and cope up with the upcoming challenges.
He said that the students should refrain themselves from unhealthy activities to keep up the name and standard of the First ISO certified Public Sector Medical University. Earlier, the DEANS (Basic Sciences, Medicine and allied, Surgery and allied) and The Director Academics also addressed the participants and briefed them regarding several postgraduate courses offered by the National and International Institutions with possible carrier opportunities.

Be conscious against water borne diseases!

Pediatric Unit of Liquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) Chairperson Dr Salma Shaikh has urged people to take necessary precautionary measures to avoid water born diseases in view of current rainy season.
Talking to this scribe here on Thursday, Dr Salma Shaikh said the virus and bacteria grow in rainy season and increasing number of patients suffering from water born diseases including gastroenteritis, food poisoning, vomiting and fever and other poisonous diseases.
She said during the rainy season it is expected that consumption of contaminated water may cause loose motion, diarrhea, Hepatitis A and E.
She said that the diseases of gastrointestinal and dehydration are common not only children, but also among the people of adultery age. The diseases prevails because of using unhygienic food and unsafe water, she said and added that if the people adopts precautionary measures including the use of boil water and milk and hygienic food, the prevalence of these diseases could be stopped.
She further urged that the general public is being advised to adopt measures: Avoid open sun specially the children, increase fluid intake, use drinking water after boiling, discard over ripened fruit and vegetables and proper disposal of garbage and other refuse.
She further said in this rainy season intestinal functions along with the digestive system become weak, and thus make the body highly susceptible to any kind of infection. Therefore always eat light food and avoid as far as possible too much of spicy and fried foods.
