Softly-spoken David Ferrer is happy to be the US Open fourth seed nobody mentions, preferring to let his racquet do his talking for him at Flushing Meadows. Ferrer, 30, reached his fourth Grand Slam quarter-final of 2012 when he beat France’s Richard Gasquet 7-5, 7-6 (7/2), 6-4 on Tuesday in a last-16 tie which was spread over seven hours because of two lengthy rain delays. In the absence of former champion Rafael Nadal, he is his country’s only hope of a Spanish champion this year. However, only Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are talked of as tournament winners. “I don’t care. That’s normal. Djokovic and Murray and Federer, they deserve the attention because they are amazing players. So it’s not a problem for me,” he said. “I’m trying do my best, do my best as possible”

Andy Roddick, the 2003 champion, who is playing in his last tournament before retirement, was into a first-set tie-break with 2009 winner Juan Martin Del Potro.
