Life paralyzes in city after first monsoon shower

Many of the areas in city plunged into darkness with all major thoroughfares flooded with rainwater as the first full-fledged spell of monsoon rains hit the provincial capital on Wednesday.
Having received a light rain early in the morning, the metropolis witnessed a relatively heavier spell in the afternoon that inundated the city roads where the commuters, specially those driving light vehicles, were seen running here and there in search for a shelter.
Many riding bikes or driving other light conveyances like rickshaws and cars were noticed stranded on roadsides trying to kick-start their vehicles which had got faulty because of the downpour. The troubled drivers were seen pushing their vehicles in search for a mechanic with passersby helping them at some points.
The roads across the city flooded with pools of rainwater with commuters finding it hard to make their way through the same. Some reckless bikers, reportedly, got injured after falling down on slippery roads in some neighborhoods.
Heavy rain in most of the areas of the provincial capital left many thoroughfares and streets inundated with water, causing severe hardship to the commuters. This, naturally, led to serious traffic jams that lasted for hours on some of the thoroughfares that were under knee-deep water.
Most affected sites are said to be the MA Jinnah Road, University Road, Hassan Square, Nipa Chowrangi, People’s Secretariat and Nazimabad.
Life for the violence-hit Karachiites toughened when some areas descended into darkness due to the most-feared electricity break down. Only the port vicinity of Keamri remained without power for more than five hours. More rains, the Met Office believes, are likely in the country’s most populated city with a poor municipal system. Specially is worth mentioning the city’s sewerage system which converts the congested metropolis into small rivers even after almost every rainfall.
