Bad Governance, Electricity shortage, Inflation, Law and Order situation are main problems in Pakistan but now heading forward majority of Pakistanis favours shorter than 5 year term for elected governments in Pakistan.
According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, majority favors shorter than 5 year term for elected governments in Pakistan: Given the choice only 34% favor 5 year term, 20% favor 4 year term and 46% favor even shorter term.
A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked “Some people think that the duration of the elected government in Pakistan should be less than 5 years whereas some people think that duration should remain 5 years. What is your opinion on this?” Responding to this, 34% believe that the duration for elected government should remain 5 years, 20% believe that duration should be reduced to 4 years whereas 46% believe that the duration should even be shorter than 4 years.
Question: “Some people think that the duration of the elected government in Pakistan should be less than 5 years whereas some people think that duration should remain 5 years. What is your opinion on this?”
It should be less then 4 year or even more so no chance for corrupt leaders.
shortening the term would be disastrous for implementation of the programme by the elected Govt.
4 will be sufficient.if doing according to their manifesto people will reelect, otherswise reject.
im with the 46%
Over the long run five year terms make sense. However, under current situation, perhaps the Consitution should be amended to reduce terms to four years for next 20 years. By then, hopefully democracy would have stabilized and political parties attained maturity and accountability becomes effective.
Three year terms make no sense as Government will keep an eye on re-election from year one and will not take tough steps to improve the economy.
Four years for every Councilor, MPA, MNA and senator but with a restriction. 50% of all councilors, MPA’s, MNA’s and Senators must be directly elected by people every two years. Provinces should have only elected CM or the Governor. No need to maintain expensive dual offices in the provinces.
This way no city, province, nor the country would ever be without an elected council, assembly or Senate even for a second. The situations like past 911 events will never arise again when there were no elected houses at the most testing moments of Pakistani history. A single man at the top was the only power house and could not resist the pressure on his own. He had no negotiation tools available for diverting/releasing the US pressure like sending the US demands to the assembly.
