Karachi Commissioner Roshan Ali Shaikh has shown his concern that smoke emitting vehicles and those without fitness clearance have created a hazard of air and noise pollution. He made such an observation while presiding over a meeting on environment pollution, said an official statement here on Sunday. On this occasion, Additional Commissioner Karachi-I, Kamran Shamshad, Additional Commissioner Karachi-II, Rubina Asif were also present.
The commissioner said the smoke emitting vehicles had marred the environment of the entire city, especially of Saddar, Tibet Centre, Empress Market, Liaquatabad,Merry-weather tower areas of the city. He said he would convene a meeting on the issue of fitness of vehicles and important decisions would be taken in this regard. He said that proper cleaning and increasing the plantation in the city would help reduce the environment degradation. He said that sea pollution has not only become a serious problem for the visitors to the sea but it has bad damaged the mangroves around. The main source of this pollution is the draining out of sewage from residential areas and contaminated water carrying chemicals from the industries, he said.
Meanwhile, he said,land mafia was involved in illegal cutting of forests and plantation spots which has added to this environment degradation. He said that on his request, Sindh Home Ministry had imposed section 144 against illegally throwing garbage and its burning. Those involved in violation of this ban would be arrested along with the vehicles carrying this waste.
