Women and public transport

In today’s modern, fast-paced world, both men and women are working to earn a better livelihood. In cities, a majority of women are attached to some profession to support their family. For this purpose, they have to move around the city by using public transport. While the system of public transport is there to facilitate the people, but there are many issues plaguing it that need serious attention. Some of these issues especially cause much trouble to women using public transport.
Being harassed on public transport is common problem for women. Since the legislation involving sexual harassment is now in effect, women must register a complaint whenever they face such an issue. At present, the anti-harassment act is providing support to our working women, and they get some redress after they register a complaint. Female travelers can also use this legislation to assert their right to public space. The government must establish different complaint cells near different local bus stops, so that the women can feel free to register their complaints and so that these cells act as a a deterrent for unruly element. Women-only public transport will also help working women and might be necessary till attitudes and practices on the ground change for the better. But attitudes must change if any measure is to be effective. If people will not respect the right of women to work about freely, no measures will amount to anything. Therefore, we must strive to change our attitudes and educate others as well.
