Thalesemias are group inherited blood disorders passed from parents
to children that affect the way body makes hemoglobin, simply stated as
the inability of body to produce adequate amount of Hemoglobin in red
blood cells ,resulting in severe anemia, severe cases of anemia may
damage organs and can result in death. Thalesemia is major health
problem of Pakistan,Pakistan has 10 million people who are Thalesemia
Carriers( a person having genes that causes this blood disorder),in
the population 5 out of 100 people are Thalesemia patients, nearly 3
million people in Sindh suffer from Thalesemia minor, while 10,000
children born with Thalesemia major every year in the country.85% of
Thalesemia major patients need blood transfusions every month of their
life apart from pharmacological treatment on regular basis and 80% of
them ultimately die due to an iron overload ,hepatitis C,and other
complications.80% of Pakistani population is unaware of the
disease.People who are carriers of Thalesemia gene show no signs and
symptoms and might not know they are carriers and thus pass disease to
their kids. In our neighbour country India there are 35 million
Thalemia Carriers and 10,000 to 12,000 Thalesemia children born every
year in the Country. This disease ruins the life of not only the
patient but also their families, parents of Thalesmic child are always
upset by severity of disease ,fear of death of their beloveds, they
usually feel guilty ,they feel they are responsible for the situation
because they Thalesemia Carriers, there are also a lot of emotional and
economical challenges in bringing up a Thalesemia child. We can fight
against this killer disease ,we can save our generations from this
disease by just a simple test .if every couple gets a simple blood
test for Thalesemia done before getting marriage we can protect of the
disesase. This blood test is carried out by taking samples of blood
from couples and used to do following tests:Hemoglobin
Electrophoresis,in addition to screening for HIV,Hepatitis B and C
virus.PPP Senator Dr Kareem Khuwaja has taken an appreciative step in
public benefit and moved a resolution in senate calling upon house for
legsilation to make Premarital medical tests of Thalesemia,Hepatiis
B,C and AIDS mandatory for every couple before marriage to avoid
spread of disease in the country.By proper implementaion of this law
and launching of awareness programmes for Thalesemia,AIDS,Hepatitis we
can get rid of this dangerous disesase.
