Democracy due to supremacy of constitution and rule of law: CJ

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said on Thursday that democracy and assemblies were running due to the supremacy of constitution and rule of law.
A huge responsibility has been cast on the shoulders of legal fraternity to stand by the supremacy of constitution and rule of law.
He expressed these views when a delegation of Sindh Bar Council consisting of Vice President GM Abbasi, Mehmood-ul-Hassan, Muhammad Aaqil, Khalid Mumtaz and other senior lawyers called on him.
The chief justice stated that black coat, black tie and black camera have played an important role in ensuring rule of law.
It was duty of the government to protect lives and possessions of people, he said adding that liberty of opinion was right of every person in the democracy.
He said that old mistakes would not be repeated and it would strengthen the system.
After the meeting, while talking to media, Karachi Bar General Secretary Khalid Mumtaz said that matters regarding lower courts were discussed during the meeting.
He added that steps taken for the expeditious justice according to the National Judicial Policy were also discussed.
