PRIYANKA to sing with Will.I.Am

While Priyanka Chopra’s
album is scheduled to release later this year, the actress turned recording artist will debut ‘In My City’, her single featuring the Black Eyed Peas frontman will.I.am at the National Football League’s (NFL) Thursday Night Kickoff match on September 13. The track has been produced by Lady Gaga’s producer RedOne.Speaking to TOI exclusively from Los Angeles, Priyanka tells us about the entire process.
How have you been spending your time in Los Angeles?
The month in LA was quite productive. We got a lot done but there is still a long way to go before we’re ready to release. It’s been a great start and I’ve had the opportunity to work with some great talent. I’ve made some serious headway with the album, which is really exciting. There is a lot left to be done and I’m really looking forward to it.

What’s the recording process like?
Where do I begin? (laughs). It’s a whole new ballgame for me. But in the past month, I’ve learned so much and have also become more comfortable with the whole process. To be honest, I was quite nervous the first few times I went into the recording booth to sing but everyone has been very supportive and helped me find my feet.

Are you writing your own songs or co-writing with someone?
A bit of both. This trip has really been a very creatively enriching experience for me and has opened up a side of me I never knew existed! I’ve been writing poems and prose for a long while now but that was more for myself; more private. But song writing is completely different and most often you’re using your own thoughts and feelings. That’s a bit scary given that you’re going to be sharing that with the rest of the world!

Tell us about how you’re maintaining your voice?
I have been working with two voice coaches — one in India and one in the US, whenever my schedule permits. It’s great because it has helped me understand what I can do with my singing voice and has also helped me develop it in many ways. It’s almost like going to a gym for my vocal chords (laughs). Singing is pretty much like using any other muscle in your body; when the vocal chords get tired, you know it, you feel it. At this stage, I try not to extend myself too much. I’m also currently relying on the music producers to guide me. I’m just very thrilled to be singing and I count on their judgment as to how much I can push my voice.

You’re a hip-hop/R&B fan. Will you rap as well for the album?
Yes, I am a fan of hip-hop and R&B, but no, that’s not something I’m going to be doing for now at least!

Will any of the tracks have remixes?
Not as of now. Currently I am working on all original tracks.
