The Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) has decided to launch a road safety awareness campaign with main focus to end use of tinted glasses, non-pattern number plates and curbing practice of over-speeding, driving motorbikes without silencers as well as one-wheeling.
The decision to launch the campaign was made following the directions of Inspector General of Police Islamabad Bani Amin Khan, who has assigned the task to SSP (Traffic) Dr Moeen Masood to ensure implementation of traffic laws and gain maximum public cooperation in this regard.
The SSP (Traffic), while chairing a meeting, said that the ITP would make every possible effort to ensure traffic discipline in the Capital with the cooperation of citizens and inculcating traffic sense among them through various informative programmes.
SP (Traffic) Khalid Rasheed, all zonal traffic DSPs and inspectors were also present in the meeting.
The SSP (Traffic) said that the ITP was doing its best efforts for safe road environment in the Capital and has involved community in its affairs.
“Our teams are visiting institutions to create traffic rules awareness and we have recruited many students as ITP as traffic volunteers,” he said.
Following the directions of the IGP Islamabad , he said that programmes of ITP FM radio channel 92.4 will be made more attractive thus creating awareness among road users and will help streamline traffic flow. He said that special task has been assigned to Program Manager Ayesha Jameel in this regard.
The SSP (Traffic) also directed to make use of speed radars more effectively and take benefit from this facility to curb over-speeding.
He said that ITP had involved community in various policing affairs and the force is getting success due to its friendly policing culture.
He assured that upcoming awareness drive about traffic rules would help to ensure safe road environment through citizens’ cooperation.
Earlier, the ITP and Riphah International University had signed a memorandum of understanding regarding broadcasting a programme aimed at traffic rules awareness on university radio FM 102.2. The MoU was signed by Riphah International University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Anees Ahmed and SSP (Traffic) in the presence of faculty members and Islamabad police officers.
This programme is broadcasted every Wednesday from 11am to 12am on FM 102.2 and hosted by the officers of the traffic police. The first programme was hosted by SSP Masood himself and his speech to participants of the signing ceremony was broadcast on the radio. SSP Masood said in that programme that the ITP had been successful in establishing a disciplined traffic system in the federal capital. He also briefed the participants about some special measures being taken up to curb traffic violations in the city.
Masood also said that road safety workshops were being arranged in government as well as private organisations and educational institutions to make the road-users aware of the various traffic rules. The idea behind increasing liaison with the students was to make them aware of the traffic laws, Masood added.
The traffic police chief further said, “This practice has proved to be very helpful in providing a disciplined traffic system to the masses.” About the performance of the capital traffic cops, the SSP (Traffic) said that the ITP’s personnel have not only helped to establish a disciplined traffic system in the capital but also reduced ratio of accidents.
He said that success of this force is due to equal application of law. Riphah International University’s vice chancellor had appreciated the efforts of ITP for ensuring road discipline in the city and hoped for its further improved performance in future. Lauding the efforts of the ITP, he said this force has earned a great respect in a short time.
He also supported the idea to increase the liaison among traffic police and various educational institutions for disciplined traffic system in the city.
