54 suspects arrested in targeted operation

As many as 54 suspects were arrested by the Rangers, and hand grenades, explosive material and other weapons were recovered from their possession during a targeted operation in Lyari on Sunday. However, the Residents of Lyari continued to protest against the operation by the Rangers. The Rangers also carried out operation in Aath Chowk, Baghdadi, Daryabad, Chakiwada and its adjoining areas. Huge cache of arms was found from a house that was identified by arrested criminal, Sameer.
On the other hand, the angry mob burnt tyres and blocked Daryabad, Chakiwada and Shah Abdul Lateef Bhattai Road. Three people were also injured in firing while protesting against the operation.
Some 16 suspects were arrested during operation from Afshan Gali and Nawaalain and weapons were also recovered from their possession.
According to the Rangers’ spokesman, the operation was conducted against target killers, extortionists and other criminals.
Earlier, this morning, heavy contingent of rangers arrived in Lyari and conducted the operation in different streets and areas.
Rangers also destroyed a torture cell during the operation.
On the other hand, local people staged protest against the operation at Lee Market, Lyari Expressway, Mauripur Road and other areas. The protesters blocked roads, burnt tyres and broke things.
Narcotics elimination govt’s top priority: minister: Sindh Minister for Excise and Taxation Mukesh Kumar Chawala has said that excise department has purchased arms of Rs 180 million to curb the illegal activities of drug smugglers.
This he said while chairing a meeting in his office here on Thursday.
Mukesh Kumar said the purpose of purchasing arms is to eradicate narcotics in Sindh. He said that eradication of the drugs was top priority of the government. Action would be taken against those who did not pay Motor Registration Taxes, he added.
He directed the officers of the department to conduct surprise raids on the main arteries of the city to take actions against non-payment of vehicle taxes.
Provincial Minister said annual target of Excise and Taxation Department has reached from over Rs 23 billion and to over Rs 28 billion that is a record in the history of province. He said that the system of taxes had been computerized in the province. Revolutionary steps have been taken in Excise and Taxation Department, he added.
Mukesh Kumar said jobs have been given on merit and all these measures are the result of the political vision and reconciliation policy of President Asif Ali Zardari.

Violence claims eight more lives

Target killing continues in the city as eight more people were killed during night between Saturday and Sunday.
According to details, some unidentified gunmen shot a man dead near Gattar Baghicha in Pak Colony. The identity of the deceased is not yet known while police have recovered a dead body from Usmania Colony in Orangi Town.
In another incident of target killing, a man was shot dead in Sheerin Jinnah Colony. In Napier, some unidentified persons shot a man dead. The deceased was identified as Shahzad.
Police have recovered dead body of a gang war accused, Anwar, from the roof of a house in Gulbahar. Police have also found a Kalashnikov and bullets lying near his body.
Some unidentified gunmen opened fire and shot a police official Gohar Abbas dead in Baldia Town area while Saleh Muhammad Baloch was shot dead in Liaquatabad No 4. In Rizvia Society, some unidentified gunmen killed Faraz.
Meanwhile, police have arrested an accused Jahangir alias Murtaza during an operation in Lines Area in Maripur. Jahangir was allegedly involved in killings of 31 people including ex-MPA Liaquat Qureshi.
