Medium to high flood likely in Chenab at Marala

Medium to high flood is likely in Chenab River at Marala in the next 24 hours, while the tributaries of Chenab, Ravi, Kabul, Swat, Kurram and Gambila rivers may also attain medium flood in the next 24-48 hours. All main rivers, including Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej are flowing normal except for Kabul, which is flowing in low flood at Warsak and medium flood at Nowshera. According to a press release issued by Federal Flood Commission, River Swat is also flowing in low flood at Charsadda Road Bridge. Saturday’s actual river flows and reservoir elevations indicate that Tarbela and Mangla dams were at elevations of 1514.02 feet and 1177 feet respectively, which are 35.98 feet and 65 feet below their respective maximum conservation levels of 1550 feet and 1242 feet.

The combined live storage position of Tarbela, Chashma and Mangla reservoirs was 7.962MAF while last year it was 11.069MAF. According to Flood Forecasting Division (FFD), Friday’s westerly wave over northeastern Afghanistan on Saturday lay over northern parts of the country. Seasonal low lay over northwestern Balochistan while monsoon current was penetrating into upper parts of the country up to 5,000 feet. The weather system is being closely monitored by the Pakistan Meteorological Department. As predicted by the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD), Lahore, scattered to fairly widespread thunderstorm and rain with isolated heavy falls are expected over Kashmir, northern and northeastern Punjab (Rawalpindi and Gujranwala Divisions) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including upper catchments of rivers Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej during the next 24 hours. Scattered thunderstorm and rain may also occur over Faisalabad, Sargodha and Lahore divisions, including Gilgit-Baltistan, besides upper catchment of the Indus River and isolated thunderstorm and rain may also occur over southern Punjab, Bahawalpur Division and northeastern Balochistan during the same period.
