Supreme Court of Pakistan on Thursday indefinitely adjourned the hearing of review petition against the July 12 Supreme Court (SC) order in connection with the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) implementation case for an indefinite period.
Special bench comprising Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmani, Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Athar Saeed heard the petition moved by the federation seeking review of the court’s July 12 order.
During Thursday’s hearing, Attorney General Irfan Qadir told the bench that he had held meetings with the prime minister and with the federal law minister, adding that, the government wanted the matter to be resolved “once and for all”.
Qadir requested to court to grant the government more time in order to carry out consultations on the matter.
He moreover said that the government had all intentions of implementing the court’s directives.
During case proceeding, Attorney General Irfan Qadir submitted before the court that government wants to resolve the issue amicably.
He said presence of Law Minister Farooq H Naek in the court room is proof of government’s seriousness in the case.
Government is ready to resolve the matter in the light of court s observation, he added.
Justice Asif Saeed Khosa remarked that court observation was limited to paragraph 177 and 178 of the NRO implementation order, which needs to be implemented.
Law Minister Farooq H Naek submitted before the court that the government does not want confrontation amongst the institutions.
Justice Khosa said the bench could not postpone the hearing of the NRO implementation case to a date later than Aug 27, adding that, on that day the court had summoned Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf in the show-cause notice issued to him over non-compliance with the Supreme Court’s ruling over the Swiss letter issue.
Justice Khosa moreover said that the court only wanted an implementation of its order.
Adjourning the review petition’s hearing to an unspecified date, Justice Khosa reiterated that the issue of contempt of court would be taken up by the Supreme Court on July 27.
It should be mentioned here that the apex court, in its July 12 order directed Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf to write a letter to Swiss authorities to reopen graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari without seeking any advice.
In previous hearing on Wednesday, Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa observed that the prime minister was not to apply his independent mind but to give direction for implementation of the court’s order in the NRO case.
The court indefinitely adjourned the hearing of review petition against the apex court’s July 12 order.
Later, while talking to the media persons outside the Supreme Court‚ Law Minister Farooq H Naek said the government will follow the constitution and law in the NRO implementation case.
He said that Pakistan Peoples Party will hold discussion within the party and at the coalition level to find out solution of the matter in accordance with the law.
