Judiciary can go to any extent for rule of law: CJP

Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has said that the judiciary could go to any extent for implementation of the constitution. Addressing an Iftar dinner and farewell party in honour of Justice Shakirullah Jan, the chief justice said external factors did not affect the verdicts taken by a judge. “The function of the Supreme Court is to maintain rule of law and superiority of the constitution,” adding that the “judiciary is bound to shoulder its responsibility as a significant pillar of the state”.
He made it clear that the verdicts of judiciary were not taken while keeping in view special personalities, vowing that the judiciary would continue to make judgments without any pressure at every cost. The CJ said the Supreme Court got guideline out of law and the constitution. “It should be made mandatory that the all the institutions should work while living within their jurisdiction,” he said. Speaking on the occasion‚ Supreme Bar Association President Yasin Azad expressed concern over the prevailing situation and said the country was heading towards a constitutional crisis.
