IMF stay out: Khurshid

Ex-senator and Jamaat-e-Islami Naib Amir Professor Khurshid Ahmad has expressed concern over a report published in the press that a high-powered delegation of the IMF met with the president of Pakistan and chief of the army staff for implementation of the IMF conditions.
He warned that further borrowing from the IMF would be even more disastrous to the economy than the one which had put the country into the present mess, because of the flawed, contradictory and anti-people policies of the government and the unrealistic conditions imposed by the IMF. Prof Khurshid strongly condemned the attempts to involve the president and chief of the army staff in this deal.
Under the constitution, it is only the chief executive who has to be involved, and as has been the practice, he too not directly, but only through the finance minister and the State Bank governor. Involvement of the president and the COAS, according to Prof Khurshid, would be violative of the constitution and a threat to the parliamentary democracy. It is more alarming that those who are talking about threat to democracy and supremacy of the parliament are, in fact, trying to disrupt the whole system by bringing in the president who is supposed to be a symbolic head and the COAS who has no business in relations to economic policies and IMF negotiations. The JI leader asked the political parties and the parliament to take immediate notice of this disastrous development.
