Kavin Pietersen with his century tuned the second test towards an interesting situation on day three. By the close of play England was trailing by 68 runs and after losing five wickets the hosts were at 351 and Pietersen was playing at 149 runs along with Mat Prior 20. Earlier, England lost the wicket of Alastair Cook on a rain-shortened morning on the third day of the Test at Headingley. England were 80 for one when lunch was taken early after only 55 minutes of play was possible as England, one down in the three-match series, set out in pursuit of South Africa’s first innings total of 419. England captain Andrew Strauss and Cook had to combat some hostile bowling from Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander after resuming at 48 for no wicket. The first runs of the day came in the fourth over when Strauss glanced Philander for four.
