It has rained but where are the drains?

Excessive rain has led to severe drainage issues in the provincial capital of the Punjab. After Saturday’s downpour, heavy showers once again started Sunday morning in Lahore leading to several roads and localities being inundated.
The rain continued to pour for three continuous hours in Lahore Sunday morning as roads began to resemble ponds making commuting difficult for the city’s residents. 110 millimeters of rain fell in the city as Jail Road, Mall Road, Ferozpur Road and other roads were submerged. Teams from WASA have so far been unsuccessful in dealing with the drainage problem.
Meanwhile two people a young and a ten year old child have died due to electrocution. Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minster Shahbaz Sharif has warned the officials that strict action would be taken against them if water was found accumulated anywhere in the city. He said he wanted results and would not be satisfied with reports. “If the system had been working properly, the water would not have accumulated,” he said, adding that elected representatives and government officers should realize their responsibilities and make the best arrangements for the quick disposal of rainwater. The CM expressed his dissatisfaction over the rainwater disposal arrangements and directed the officials of WASA to improve the arrangement for the drainage of water He said the submersion of low lying areas in rainwater was a proof that practical measures had not been taken due to which citizens had to face serious problems caused by heavy rain and traffic jams. He said it was criminal negligence on the part of concerned departments and he would not tolerate any laziness from any officer.
FLOOD WARNINGS: Low and middle intensity floods are feared at various points along some rivers after the rains. The situation worsened by flash floods entering from India which stirs flood threats at various points along Chenab river in which water follow at Mirala has peaked to 150,000 cusecs while 194,000 cusecs is passing through Qadirabad and Khanki. One hundred forty-two thousand cusec of water would pass through Trimor Head Works on August 7. Meanwhile water level at Tarbela Dam and Mangla Dam has risen to 1,482 feet and 1,162 feet respectively.
