Even after a month of being notified, the provincial government has still not succeeded in overcoming the “Ranikhet” disease in peacocks spread over various regions of Tharparkar, as seven more birds fall victim to the dreadful contagion, raising the overall death toll to 180.
Following up on demands made by organizations, working to protect precious birds from extinction, the provincial government and livestock department made tall claims of taking solid steps, dispatching poultry expert teams, and carrying out vaccination, but no action was taken.
According to wildlife department sources, despite the presence of teams comprising veterinary experts carrying medicines to cure the disease, the problem has not been overcome. Residents of affected areas were terrified over the situation and repeatedly requested authorities to control the disease as soon as possible. Residents of Tharparkar have threatened to stage protests if more teams and medicines were not dispatched to the area to cure “Ranikhet”.
Apathy, apathy, apathy on part of Wildlife Department and Sindh Government.
