Unlike what was predicted earlier about a heavy rainfall in this summer than those in the last two years, monsoon rains in Pakistan have not fallen so far.
A few months back, the National Disaster Management Authority predicted a warning for heavy rains in lower Sindh and Makran coast. However, Pakistan Meteorological Department is of the view that it is impossible for the meteorological departments in all over the world to forecast rainfall two months before the monsoon season.
Pakistan Meteorological Department Director General Arif Mehmood said, “We can predict the rain average three to five days before it falls.”
He said that the NDMA’s prediction was its own while the PMD had its own system to forecast a few weeks before monsoon. In this regard, a survey was carried out by Gallup Pakistan to know the perceptions of the common people about summer rains in Pakistan, which revealed that 56% of Pakistanis believe that this year summer rains were less than average; 35% believe there is no difference and there has been the same amount of rainfalls this year, 4% believe that there has been more rainfall compared to last year. However, 5% did not give a view.
This nationally representative survey was held under Gillani Research Foundation with the question, “According to your view was there less rain, more or the same during this year in Pakistan?”
