The seven Pakistani hostages released by Somali pirates after almost 1.5 years reached their homeland on Thursday.
Their release was secured after intense efforts by Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad, Human Rights activist Ansar Burney and real estate tycoon Malik Riaz. The pirates released the hostages on Wednesday.
The hostages arrived at Karachi airport in a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight. Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) chief Ahmed Chinoy also accompanied the seven hostages. The seven Pakistanis include Captain Mujtaba Rafique, Kashiful Islam, Faqir Mohammad, Ahsan Naveed, Raheel Anwar, Zulfiqar Ali and Javed Saleem.
The governor and chief minister of Sindh welcomed the seven hostages. The hostages’ relatives were joyous over the return of their loved ones. In November 2010, 23 crew members on board MV Albedo were kidnapped by Somali pirates. The seven Pakistanis were taken to Nairobi after their release. The remaining 15 crewmembers, including seven Bangladeshis, six Sri Lankans, one Indian and an Iranian remain in pirates’ custody.

  1. Congratulations to the hostages who are now back with their families.
But I would like to know how the MQM could contact with the Pirates of Somalia and why the governor of the province of Sindh rushes to Dubai and who knows where he had been travelling from there. The suspicious is spontaneously expressed when it comes to MQM for the simple reason that MQM is not a political organisation. Its activities mirror an organisation which runs on fascist lines and it has instilled fear in the hearts and minds of everyone in beleaguered Pakistan. The so called independent media remains tight lipped and so called bold and courageous journalists remain tight lipped.

You will see that such incidents will he happening quite frequently because it involves lot of money. It is all for the money and power. An organisation which excelled in the art of extortion and blackmailing is now crying foul. Imagine Altaf Hussain is asking the ever so magnanimous president Asif Zardari to take action against extortionist in Karachi. This is really funny.

    • Dear observer: Your disquiet over the government's failure to contact the pirates is uncalled for. Our government fails to do the needful on a regular basis. When has it acted efficiently and promptly. Whether it is bombings, murders, kidnapping, robbing, Which crime has it solved? By the way, the Sindh governor alone did not obtain the release of the captives: Ansar Burney and CPLC put in their efforts. And, I don't understand why you think the MQM is not a political organization because, as you say, it "runes on fascit lines". Please be reminded that fascism is the name of a political ideology just like communism, etc. Moreover, all the major political parties in Pakistan operate along lines similar to dictatorship and fascism. For instance, Benazir Bhutto was PPP chairperson for life without an internal party election; Nawaz Sharif heads PML-N again without elections within the party. One of the glaring contradictions in Pakistani politics is that politicians who project themselves as democrats themeselves occupy the top positions within their parties without a democratic process.
