Chief of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lieutenant General Zaheer ul-Islam has met outside Washington with senior US intelligence officials after a long gap in such contacts.
Reports of the talks come as both countries look to renew cooperation on battling extremist militants. Lieutenant General Zaheer ul-Islam is the first ISI chief to visit the United States in a year. The Inter-Service Public Relations office said Islam was traveling to the United States to meet US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director David Petraeus.
A foreign news agency, quoting sources familiar with Islam’s visit, said he went to CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, late on August 1. However, neither the CIA nor Pakistan’s embassy in Washington would provide details. The meeting comes after Islamabad recently reopened supply routes through Pakistani territory for NATO troops in Afghanistan.
