His last film (Dibakar Banerjee’s Shanghai) did not set the cash registers afire but it made the critics sit up and notice Emraan Hashmi’s power-packed performance. Making an effort to consciously break away from his stereotype image of a ‘serial kisser’, Emraan is hoping that in the next few years he will be able to reinvent himself with every film.
He, however, refuses to admit that he was trapped in ‘stereotype’ characters earlier! Emraan feels he has always experimented with his kind of cinema. He says, “If you consider my work in the last 10 years, then I have always done roles that had a shock value and provided entertainment for the masses. I don’t think the critics or the masses can blame me for doing meaningless potboilers.”
Does he then consider the regular candyfloss cinema not ‘his type’? He says, “I hate the usual song-dance films and will not opt for candyfloss films. Even if I am working with Karan Johar, the film will have sensible romance, not candyfloss. If one has to grow as an actor then one needs to do realistic, hard-hitting films and play darker characters too. I may be known as the ‘kissing’ hero and may have received a lot of flak for doing intimate scenes, but today almost every actor is doing them. All films have a kissing scene.”
When it comes to socializing with the film crowd, Emraan prefers to be at home, unless he is promoting a film. Emraan confesses that he hardly has any friends from the industry and he prefers to keep it that way. He says, “I hate film parties and I had decided early on in my career that I will never be part of the social circuit in Bollywood. It’s not my cup of tea. I just wait for my film to get over and disconnect from my professional world. I like to hang out with my friends outside the film industry. If you want stable and solid friendships, then it is better to look for them outside the industry. It’s better to unwind with people who do not belong to the film world.”
Emraan likes spending ‘us’ time with his two and a half year old son Ayaan and wife Parveen in his penthouse in Goa. Eventually, Emraan has plans to become a producer but for now he is only concentrating on his schedule that involves work on Rajkumar Gupta’s Ghanchakkar, Ekta Kapoor’s Ek Thi Daayan and Vikram Bhatt’s Raaz-3. As he prepares to leave, he says, “It’s only a character that can take commercial liberties, will interest me. I am not cut out for run-of-the-mill stuff and jumping around dancers.”
