The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) is preparing a complaint to lodge with the Press Trust of United Kingdom (PTUK) against The Sun for publishing a fake news item, just to defame Pakistan.
“There is a procedure to sue the newspaper for defamation. First a complaint has to be lodged with ombudsman at the National Press Trust of the UK and then they can further proceed,” NADRA Chairman Tariq Malik said on Tuesday.
“We are waiting for a report of the Joint Investigation Team and as soon as we receive their findings we would finalise the complaint and send it to Ministry of Interior for further progress,” he said.
Malik said the authority was expected to complete the complaint by this week “provided we receive JIT’s report in time”.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik had said per inquiry the story in British tabloid, The Sun, about alleged passport scam was a conspiracy to bring Pakistan a bad name.
A case has been registered against Ali Asad, main accused in the alleged passport scam and the British government has been asked to deport him.
The facts gathered during investigations have also been sent to the British newspaper through Pakistan High Commission in London.
Further investigations are in progress.
