Jamaat-e-Islami chief Munawar Hasan has said President Asif Zardari’s election for another five-year term is not acceptable.
Addressing a gathering on Sunday, Hasan said, “The government is a failure on all fronts and the ‘gang of four’ is plundering public wealth with both hands… if they manage to come to power for another term, there will be anarchy in the country.”
The JI chief said news of Zardari’s re-election from the present assemblies was in circulation and “something of the sort is being cooked up between Zardari and the other parties in the coalition”.
The masses, who were opposed to surrendering the country’s independence and sovereignty before the US and wanted an end to the ongoing load shedding, price hike, unemployment and lawlessness, would not want such conspiracy to succeed, he added.
He said the ruler’s corruption was the cause of the prolonged load shedding of electricity even during the month of Ramadan. He said this was despite the fact that the generation capacity of electricity in the country was higher than the energy requirement but the corrupt rulers were not making payments to the power producing companies.
Hasan pointed out that a large amount, around Rs 70 to 100 billion from the public exchequer was being dished out to PPP workers in the name of the Benazir Income Support Programme annually.
The JI chief condemned the airing of a Hollywood film depicting two holy prophets on a private TV channel and said the step was a violation of Islamic tenets and had hurt the sentiments of the Muslims masses.
He said the JI had honest, sincere and competent leadership that could steer the country out of the crisis and put it back on the road to progress and prosperity.
“The JI, in its manifesto, has already vowed to end load shedding within six months besides 30 percent cut in prices,” he added.
