Anum Bandey broke her Pakistan record at the Aquatic Centre here on Saturday, competing in the Women’s 400m Individual Medley, but bowed out of the London Olympic Games after failing to qualify for the finals. The 15-year-old Bandey, who along with runner Rabia Ashiq was the only other female participant from Pakistan, competed in the first heat of the event this morning but her time of 5.34.64 saw her finish fourth in her heat. However, her time was over three seconds quicker than her qualifying effort (5.37.11), meaning the teenager set a new national record.Vietnam’s Thi Anh Vien Nguyen remained finished first with a time of 4:50.32. Mexico’s Susana Escobar Torres finished second (4:50.57) while Finland’s Noora Laukkanen took third place (4:53.54). “You can learn a lot from here. I have learnt a lot from the older athletes. I am still young – I’m 15,” she said. “Olympics are amazing. I was really nervous at the start. I had to break the national record which I did but I have been preparing for a year and to compete with all of these amazing athletes is an amazing experience,” she said.
Bad start doesn't mean bad future. Hopefully she'll come back next time or in any other event. http://www.pakistanexaminer.com
She at least has the consolation of breaking the national record, plus at 15 she has good years ahead. But will she get the support here in Pakistan that would get the best from her? Probably not.
