The Supreme Court Wednesday gave Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf another fortnight’s breathing space over reopening graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.
The court had ordered the prime minister to comply by Wednesday with an order to write to authorities in Switzerland asking them to reopen multimillion dollar corruption probes into the president.
Former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, was thrown out of office for refusing to write to the Swiss and the court this month made veiled threats that the new premier could suffer the same fate.
But on Wednesday, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa adjourned the case until August 8 after the attorney general, representing the government, asked for time to make “serious and genuine efforts” to resolve the stand-off with the judiciary.
“We trust that it is not impossible to bridge the gap between stated positions of the two institutions,” the judge said.
On Tuesday, the attorney general urged the court to withdraw its orders, calling them “un-implementable” and contrary to the constitution.
The government has resisted judges’ demands to reopen investigations into Zardari, arguing he enjoys immunity as head of state.
The showdown could force elections before February 2013 when the government would become the first in Pakistan’s history to complete an elected, full five-year mandate.
The allegations against Zardari date back to the 1990s, when he and his wife, former premier Benazir Bhutto, are suspected of laundering $12 million allegedly paid in bribes by companies seeking customs inspection contracts.
In 2009, the court overturned a political amnesty that froze investigations into the president and other politicians, ordering that the cases be reopened.

  1. It is ironic – the SC is behaving like a "Dictator" – everyday SC pass an order directing the Executive to do this and not to that!!! – These Judges have made a mockery of Judicial system in this country – Hell will not broke if this swiss-letter episode is delayed for few more months…. fail to understand what difference it gonna make for ppl of Pakistan…..? SC k hut-daharmi hai ?

    • What difference will it make to PPP if they write a letter? In these 4 years and do what the PPP has taken seriously, can you tell me any thing that they have done that truly justify their democratic stance.

  2. Elections will be announced soon and Asif Ali Zardari will be president because of his broad vision of coalition with corrupts and wand k khao with Majmooaa muslim leagues .

  3. PPP always work for the party and not for the country. They always consider their own personalities as more important than Pakistan. PPP is converted into Mafia is no more a party.

  4. The SC should do the right thing and call Zardari to the stand as he is the one stopping the letter being written. Let the evil b.a.s.t.a.r.d. face the music.

  5. supreme court has no right to order prime minister about the letter in the presence of article 248

    • You r Hindu B*A*S*T*A*R*D and want to disintegrate federation of Pakistan because u know Zardari had saved Pakistan after murder of Benazir.

      • Kamil, you are not only a disgrace to mankind but also a traitor who is more dangerous to the well being of Pakistan than any Hindu can ever be. When people speak the truth about your father, you are accusing people of being a Hindu. Your analogy suggests that over 90% of Pakistani population are conspiring Hindus. Do mankind and in Particular Pakistan a favour and kill yourself you abhorrent and despicable creature.
