Lawyers protested against the new contempt of court law by boycotting court proceedings across the country on Monday.
Media reports said lawyers boycotted court proceedings in all major cities, including Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Faisalabad, Quetta, Multan, Sukkur, Gujranwala and Mianwali to protest changes to the contempt law. The lawyers lamented that the bill was passed to provide protection to a few people, adding that the new contempt of court bill had undermined the freedom of judiciary. The lawyers said the legal fraternity and the masses had rejected the bill. The lawyers said those harping on the tune of democracy, including the president, prime minister and the forces behind the issue of missing Pakistanis’ were the real elements responsible for recent tirade against the judiciary. “The present saga is to undermine the independent judiciary and judges,” they added.
