‘Poet of the East’ still rules many hearts

According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, Iqbal continues to be the most popular poet among Pakistanis, liked by 28 percent followed by Parveen Shakir, 17 percent; Ahmed Faraz (12 percent) and both Ghalib and Faiz at 7 percent. A national representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked, “Who was their favourite poet?” Responding to this, 28 percent claimed that Iqbal was their favourite poet, 17 percent think of Parveen Shakir as their favourite poetess, 12 percent think of Ahmed Faraz, 7 percent think of Ghalib and 7 percent think of Faiz as their favourite poet whereas 5 percent cite other poets as their favourite. However, 15percent claimed that no one was their favourite poet and 9 percent did not give a view.
