District and Sessions Judge Amjad Ali Bohyo recorded the statements of the officials of Central Jail, Hyderabad, at a hearing on Saturday. The judge, on the orders of Sindh High Court, is conducting an inquiry in respect of violent incidents that occurred last week in the jail.
A prisoner released on bail shortly after the July 13 jail riots, Manzoor Ali Jamali, appeared before the court and requested that he be allowed to depose. The judged, while granting his request, heard the former inmate’s grievances.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Jail Police Gulzar Channa told the court that the police resorted to aerial firing and shelling only when the prisoners tried to break the prison walls in order to escape.
He asserted that the under trial inmate who was shot dead on that day was not directly hit by a police bullet.
“The prisoners not only tried to break the walls but they also beat their fellows who tried to stop them from mutinying,” he deposed before the judge.
Jail Superintendent Qazi Nazeer Ahmed and Deputy Superintendent Gul Muhammad Shaikh also recorded their statements before the judicial inquiry.
