Shoaib Akhtar, the former Pakistan fast bowler, believes that the country needs genuine fast bowlers and Mohammad Amir, the banned young cricketer, deserves another go at the international sport. The left-arm fast bowler, along with the former captain, Salman Butt and new ball partner Mohammad Asif, is currently serving a five-year ban imposed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for bowling deliberate no-balls during the England tour in 2010.
Amir and Asif were considered to be the fined fast bowling talents of the globe, proving to be the most lethal bowling pair in 2009-10, making inroads in the batting line-ups of Australia, New Zealand and England. Their absence has massively hurt Pakistan, the rest of the fast bowlers (Umar Gul, Aizaz Cheema and Wahab Riaz) being too inconsistent at the ultimate level of the game.
The Rawalpindi Express is of the opinion that such a long ban on Amir is too harsh and the youngster must be given an opportunity to revive his career.
“If a player repeats the same mistake again then he should be face life ban from the game of cricket but as for Amir he committed a mistake and was banned by the ICC for five years. So I believe as soon he completes his sentence, he should return to international arena,” he said.
In the recently concluded tour of Sri Lanka, another young left-arm fast bowler, Junaid Khan, impressed one and all, picking up 14 scalps on batting tracks, giving hope to Pakistan cricket fans. While speculating about the forthcoming ICC World T20 2012 to be held in Sri Lanka in a couple of months’ time, Akhtar expressed that Pakistan possesses some brilliant players who can turn out to be match-winners in the mega event. Shoaib feels, “Our team should give their best at the mega event and the results will be positive.” The fastest bowler of the game’s history has also launched a website to stay in touch with his fans.
“My fans are my encouragement and it is because of them I launched my official website,” he added. “I will keep my fans update through my website.”
