Contempt law: SC forms five-member bench to hear petitions

A larger bench of the Supreme Court (SC) has been constituted to hear the petitions filed against Contempt of court law 2012, media reports said on Friday.
The five-member larger bench comprises Justice Shakirullah Jan, Justice Tasadduq Hussain Jilani, Justice Jawwad S. Khwaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain and is headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry.
The apex court has already appointed July 23 as the date to commence the hearing 13 constitutional petitions filed against the law of contempt.
It should be mentioned that the government led by Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) rushed through the passage process to get the contempt law adopted by both Senate and National Assembly to save the new prime minister a disqualification bid by the court.
The petitions requested the court to make respondents the federal government, prime minister, senate chairman and national assembly speaker.
The court has called Attorney General of Pakistan Irfan Qadir to assist the court in the case.
