The Supreme Court has issued orders to the four provincial chief secretaries to present reports regarding implementation of existing laws, in relevance to organ transplantation. A three-member bench of SC headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary, on Tuesday, heard a case on the illegal transplant of human organs. He noted that the constitution addresses transplant of human organs in Articles 37 and 38. The chief justice said that unlawful transplantation of human organs is a social evil, and expressed hope that the provinces would further legislate against this illegal activity. He asked the authorities to conduct a survey and present a report on this illegal and inhumane business.
The court directed DPO Rawalpindi to inspect hospitals notorious for organ trafficking. The applicant’s lawyer, Tariq Mehmood told the court that all provinces had vowed to legislate in this regard but still have not done so. To which Justice Jawad Khwaja remarked, that the government takes an hour and five minutes in drafting laws, but years are spent on legislation to attract people’s interest. The court adjourned hearing of the case till August 1.
