Tom Cruise, 50, tied the knot with Katie Holmes, 33, in a storybook Italian castle in November 2006. Unfortunately, their fairytale romance has ended. Tom Cruise didn’t have to fork out a lump sum in his divorce settlement with Katie Holmes, but he will pay handsomely in child support, it has been revealed.
According to reports, Holmes did not get any money at all in the divorce, which was said to be $50 million, TMZ.com reported.
Sources close to Holmes have stressed that she wasn’t after Cruise’s money in the divorce, but wanted the best for her daughter. As one source put it, “she has her own money.”
However, the Mission Impossible star is paying “a lot of money” in child support for his daughter, Suri, 6, which amounts to “more than $10 million.”
Here’s why Katie separated from Tom:
To keep Suri away from Scientology Citing unnamed sources, TMZ.com claims Holmes filed for divorce mainly over Cruise’s ties to Scientology, “fearing that Tom would drag Suri deep into the church.” “We’re told the couple had been arguing over Suri – that she’s now of the age where Scientology becomes a significant part of her life,” says the tabloid.
“Suri faced an inquisition of 99 sinister questions at a Scientology boot camp. The chilling prospect helped to convince Katie Holmes to divorce the movie superstar,” reports the Sun.
To relaunch her career
Katie Holmes’ friends believe that the actress’ career will be relaunched following her multi-million divorce from husband Tom Cruise. The star, who posed seductively in a bathing suit earlier this year for Brazilian jewellery label H Stern, is expected to build on the acclaim she won as Jackie Kennedy in the mini TV series The Kennedys.
To end her robotic life
The five-year marriage to Cruise is said to have left her turning into a robot. “Katie felt she was going crazy and was actually turning into the robot that the press always made her out to be. She has a great personality but changed so much when she was with Tom. She became downtrodden and insipid,” the Daily Express quoted a source as saying.
To reclaim her freedom
“Tom is nearing 50 and when he’s not working, he either goes to the gym or hangs out with Scientology buddies. Katie is still a young woman and she wants to go out and have fun. She wants her freedom back,” the Daily Express quoted a source as saying.
