The Punjab government on Friday appointed professor of pediatrics Mehmood Shaukat principal of Allama Iqbal Medical College in place of Professor Javaid Akram.

Parliamentary Health Secretary Saeed Elahi said Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif wanted to restore the Health Department’s traditions and values.
“The government has decided to rehabilitate the Health Department to provide best health facilities to the poor and needy. Seniority will be the number one principle in the postings and transfers of principals of medical colleges, medical superintendents, EDOs, DHOs and other high officials,” he said.

“Corrupt, junior and incompetent officers were appointed on senior posts and as a result the department showed marked deterioration in standards of delivery.”
