The Contempt Court Bill, 2012, became a law on Thursday after President Asif Ali Zardari signed it. Per the new law, the prime minister, ministers and chief ministers will have cover against any aggression from the top court of the country. After the go-ahead by President Zardari, the bill became the part of the constitution in an apparent move vis-à-vis Supreme Court (SC) to save the new prime minister from disqualification in the footsteps of former PM Yousaf Raza Gilani. On Wednesday, the Upper House of parliament had adopted the Contempt of Court Bill, 2012, amid a strong protest by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
The bill had already been passed by the National Assembly on Monday. The bill exempts prime minister, governors, chief ministers, federal ministers and state ministers from contempt proceedings over appropriate criticism. The bill has been challenged in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, while PPP stalwarts like Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan and Senator Raza Rabbani have said that the apex court could strike down the law.

  1. I want my own country too where I can make my own laws and give my action every protection I could. I want to stuff my country with ppp jiaylas who will obey my every command and never ever question my intentions or motives. I want to rob them blindly and still have their unquestionable loyalty. I want to have a hiram full of girls like hina khar and I want them at my disposal all the time. I don't want to be liable for anything and I want laws that are there to protect me and me alone. Oh. I also want zardari to polish my shoes everyday and I want BB to cook for me every day.

  2. This is a monstrosity, not a legislation, that allows judiciary to be ridiculed by thugs and criminals in the guise of freedom of speech while a toothless court has their judgements thrown in dustbin in front of them. Where else in the world do you witness sitting ministers abuse judges on television talk shows as was done recently by Sharjeel Memon

  3. The Parliament is requested to re-consider and reveiw about the sentences awarded by Martial Law Regulations and declare all these sentences out lawed and the Effectees under these regulations must be reviewed and let them re-instated with immediate effect with all benefits and facilities.Lot of people will get relief and will pray for the glory and dignity of President of Pakistan Mr.Zardari.It will be warmly welcome by the general public too.

    • Mohd yunus butt….if that was the reason than this law shud hv been changed thru 18 th amendment in the beginning…hence, it has been changed with lightning speed to benefit few…why no laws that may benefit normal poor people has seen such speed ?

  4. The law should be for all citizens of Pakistan, all Pakistanis should have the right to express their opinion about our judiciary and judicial systems and the judgments they make (although they are also busy forcing elected governments into telling how to run Pakistan instead of interpreting already made law) another law should also be made to clarify that judiciary has absolutely no right to make laws or strike them down, thats the job of the parliament, Judiciary should stick to only interpreting the law.

  5. The Contempt of Law is going to be the last straw. It is giving cover to around 100 people to ridicule the Judiciary. Nobody can make a law for hundred or a couple of people which is against the spirit of the rule of law. The law has endorsed that prime minister, governors, chief ministers, federal ministers, and state ministers are immune and they can ridicule the country's top Judiciary upon their desires. Under this law, in the longer run, Judiciary would not be able to uphold the democracy as it has done and doing in the past four years. This law stabs in the back the democracy itself and lawlessness will prevail in the country.

  6. the Holdy cows of Pakistan trying protect themselves and pretending to be above the law!
No one is above the law, time to sacrifice these holy cows for Pakistan!
