Lahore High Court Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial on Wednesday ordered City District Government Lahore (CDGL) to provide a report by July 25 on funding for the laptop distribution ceremony held at Punjab University (PU) on March 25. He issued this order on a plea filed by Chaudhry Nazir Ahmad who had challenged the use of PU funds for the laptop distribution ceremony. Earlier, counsel for CDGL appeared before court and said that the funds for the laptop distribution ceremony were provided by CDGL. The court, however, ordered a submission of a report over this issue and demanded an explanation of the law under which these funds had been provided by CDGL.
The petition claimed that the PU vice chancellor (VC) of PU sanctioned a grant of Rs 30 million for arranging the distribution ceremony at PU Quaid-i-Azam Campus without permission from PU syndicate. He claimed that the VC arranged this event to oblige Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and PML-N President Nawaz Sharif by inviting them as chief guests.
