Transparent elections if approved for CEC: Ibrahim

Justice (retd) Fakhruddin G Ibrahim on Monday said that his top priority would be to hold transparent elections in the country whereas the media and civil society would be responsible and active players.

The former jurist said that while his nomination was still pending, he would be willing to become the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) if approved.

The opposition and government have been going back and forth for some time in regards to the appointment of the CEC.

Underscoring the need to ensure free, fair and transparent elections in the country, the Ibrahim laid out his course of action, saying, “after taking over as CEC, I will take stock of the electoral rolls”. Ibrahim also said he is opposed to the dual nationality of lawmakers.

Talking to the media outside the Supreme Court, Ibrahim said only the prime minister who can call for general elections, however, destruction is bound to trail if elections are avoided.
