Emergecny Department of the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) is need of surgeons as only five surgeons are available to perform cardiac surgeries, hospital sources said. Despite performing eight to ten cardiac surgeries daily and around 2,400 surgeries per annum, the patients for cardiac surgeries have to wait for three to six months in waiting list.
Sources said that PIC was established in 1989 when the population of Lahore was 3.5 million but now after the passage of 23 years, the population of the city has mounted to around eight million and only 17-bed emergency department is available in the PIC.
Overall the hospital consists of 337 beds where four modes of treatments being performed including angiography, angioplasty, pacemakers and bypass surgeries. Around 200 medical officers are performing in the hospital for back treatments.
