Parliamentary Committee for appointment of Chief Election Commissioner on Monday developed consensus on Justice (Retd) Fakhar uddin G ebrahim as new election commissioner.
The committee’s recommendations would be sent to the prime minister for seeking approval of its decision and afterward it would be signed by the president.
Committee chairman Khursheed Shah presided over the meeting of the parliamentary committee, held in the parliament house. The meeting unanimously recommended the name of Fakhar uddin G Ebrahim as the new election commissioner.
PML-N parliamentarian Raja Zafar ul Haq, Abdul Qadir Baloch, MQM’s senior leader Farooq Sattar, Abdul Ghafoor Hadri (JUI-F) and Haji Adeel from ANP were present in the meeting.
Talking to journalists after the meeting, Khursheed Shah called the committee’s decision as historic and beginning of a new chapter and said that mutual consensus by PML-N parliamentarians proved that it had accepted charter of democracy 90%.
Benazir Bhutto had signed Charter of Democracy for the establishment of independent and transparent election commission in Pakistan, he added.
He said this unanimous decision of the committee had negated the conjectures about the transparency of coming general elections.
The government and its partners were committed to remove all reservation of the political parties about the next general elections, he added.
Calling Justice (Rtd) Fakhar uddin G Ebrahim a neutral person, Khursheed said that Fakhar uddin G Ibrahim was an experienced and most suitable person for this post.
Although ANP and MQM suggested some names in the meeting for the appointment of new election commissioner but finally consensus developed on Fakhar uddin G Ebrahim.
It is pertinent to mention that Justice (Retd) Fakhar uddin G Ebrahim had served as Sindh governor in Benazir Bhutto’s regime.
