No power outages in Ramadan: Mukhtar

There will be no power outages during the month of Ramadan, Water and Power Minister Ahmed Mukhtar said on Friday.
In a statement, Mukhtar claimed that electricity supply would improve from Friday, while, according to PEPCO sources, electricity generation currently stood at 14,010MW against the demand of 18,174MW.
The sources said a decrease in the shortfall was due to the improvement in oil supply.
Mukhtar said, “We will achieve the level of demand by generating more electricity,” adding, “We will provide relief to the general public during Ramadan.” He said President Asif Ali Zardari had issued directives to this effect.
He said measures were being taken to overcome the problem of load shedding. The minister said the government was taking all possible steps to provide relief to the common man and all available resources were being utilised to achieve the objectives. Mukhtar said the PPP government would continue to work for the welfare of the people.
Meanwhile, the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has demanded NEPRA increase the rate of electricity by Rs 2.79 per unit. NEPRA would take a final decision in this regard on July 19.
According to NEPRA, there was a cut in the price of furnace oil by Rs 3,000 per tonne, bringing down production price to 32 paisas from 99 paisas. The Jamshoro Power Company has decreased its tariff to 86 paisas from 99 paisas and the Northern Power Company from 96 to 32 paisas. NEPRA was of the view that effects of bringing down the tariff would eventually trickle down to consumers.
